Certification Preparation Workshop

Intended Audience
The certification preparation workshop is intended for therapist who have trained several years ago but are now interested in applying for certification. It can also be used by those trained before 2011 or those trained by a trainer who is not certified by PCIT International as one component of preparing for certification.
Components of the Training
If you were trained before 2011 or trained by a trainer who is not certified by PCIT International, there are three options to become eligible to apply for PCIT Therapist Certification:
1. Complete a Certification Preparation Workshop with accompanying skills review. In addition to this 1.5- to 2-day workshop, participants are also required to demonstrate minimal skill competence through skill reviews (prerecorded or live) similar to those required of all PCIT Therapists (CDI Teach, CDI Coach, PDI Teach, and PDI Coach). If competencies have been documented through other training activities (e.g., Initial PCIT Training after 2011 or training with a Within Agency Trainer), these session reviews are not required.
OR
2. Complete the Therapist Initial Training (40 hours face-to-face) and Continuation Training: Components include all case experience, skill review, and therapist competency requirements comprising therapist training (see Training Requirements for Certification as a PCIT Therapist ),
OR
3. Contract with a PCIT International Global or Regional Trainer to Review Four Session Tapes: : If a provider has been using the 2011 PCIT International Protocol, received 40 hours of training, completed follow-up consultation, and is confident in treatment fidelity, it is possible to contract with a PCIT International Certified Global or Regional Trainer for session reviews. Required session reviews include a CDI Teach, CDI Coach, PDI Teach, and PDI Coach of sessions using the 2011 PCIT International Protocol. The Global or Regional Trainer reviews the sessions for treatment integrity according to the PCIT International Protocol Treatment Integrity checklists and assesses teaching and coaching competencies. Following the session reviews, the Global or Regional Trainer will write a letter regarding the provider’s competency level and eligibility for PCIT International Certification.

- Certification Preparation Workshops vary in length but range from 1.5 to 2.5 days and cover the following topics:
- Updates in the PCIT Protocol, DPICS-IV, and coaching
- Advanced topics in PCIT application
- Preparation for Therapist Certification
- Many Certification Preparation Workshops offer APA-approved CEUs.
