       Brief program description

The PCIT research and clinical services team was established by Yi-Chuen Chen, Ph.D. in the Department of Psychology at National Chung-Cheng University in Chia-Yi, Taiwan in 2006. The mission of the team is threefold: 1.) to train professionals and graduate students in the area of clinical child psychology to conduct PCIT, 2.) to conduct research in the area of parent-child interaction, and 3.) to provide PCIT for children and their family members.

     Training

Dr. Chen is originally from Taiwan and attended West Virginia University in 2001, receiving a doctoral degree in Clinical Child Psychology in 2006. During her time at West Virginia University, Dr. Chen was under direct supervision of Cheryl B. McNeil, Ph.D. (her gradate advisor) and learned to conduct PCIT.

     Activities and events

Dr. Chen has provided a number of talks and workshops regarding the application of PCIT in Taiwan. Dr. Chen also has offered training and consultation for professionals and graduate students who want to become a PCIT therapist. The training and consultation procedures are described below. First, a 3- to 6-hour intermediate level workshop is offered by Dr. Chen to introduce PCIT to the interested professionals and graduate students in Taiwan. The trainees are expected to have basic understanding of the PCIT principles and goals through the training. Following the intermediate level workshop, the trainees attend a 40-hour, advanced-level workshop. The 40-hour, advanced-level workshop consists of lectures, discussions, demonstrations (both in vivo and using videotapes), PCIT skills role plays & evaluations, and reading the PCIT manual and articles. After the completion of the advanced-level workshop, the trainees then serve as a co-therapist of the trainer to see at least two PCIT cases and serve as a primary therapist to see at least one PCIT case. Weekly individual or group supervision is provided to each trainee throughout the course of seeing their three cases. There have been ten licensed clinical psychologists and ten graduate students receiving the training and supervision in Taiwan. All of them currently serve as a co-therapist of the trainer to see at least one or two PCIT cases.

Research

Dr. Chen received grants funded by the National Science Council (NSC) in Taiwan to conduct PCIT research. In recent years, Dr. Chen and her research team members have been developing and establishing the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of PCIT assessment measures. Dr. Chen and her research team members also have been developing the Chinese version of PCIT treatment protocols. Dr. Chen’s lab research is progressing nicely toward the evaluation of the protocols to determine its efficacy.
