South Korea

Three groups in south Korea currently work with PCIT. The program description below focuses on the program located at Torch Trinity Christian Counseling Center (TTCCC). Information about the other Korean PCIT groups’ activities is forthcoming.

Brief TTCCC program description

The PCIT program is located at the Torch Trinity Christian Counseling Center (TTCCC) affiliated with Torch Trinity Graduate University, in Seoul, Korea. TTCCC offers a wide range of psychological services to the community.

The PCIT program at TTCCC was established by Eunnie R. Rhee, Psy.D., to offer PCIT to Korean families and to conduct PCIT studies. There are approximately 20 therapists who are currently providing PCIT to Korean families at TTCCC.

 

 

Training

Eunnie R. Rhee first received PCIT training during her doctoral internship at Lydia Home Association, Chicago, in 2001. She begain providing PCIT to Korean families since 2002 at New Life Counseling Center, Seoul, Korea. In 2009, following the recommendations of the Training Guidelines, Eunnie Rhee and Young Nam Park, completed 40 hour 5-day PCIT training and a 2 day advanced training with Cheryl McNeil, in order to set up the PCIT program at TTCCC. Phone or email case consultation was provided by Cheryl McNeil.

Beginning in 2010, Eunnie R. Rhee and Young Nam Park trained PCIT study assistants comprised of students and therapists at TTCCC in both 3 hour 14 week semester and 5 day formats. In 2011, 10 therapists who received 40 hours training at TTCCC also completed a 2 day advanced training with Cheryl McNeil, and Eunnie Rhee and Young Nam Park served as co-trainers for the event.

At TTCCC, therapists who provide PCIT meet regularly for case consultation.

Activities and events

In 2007, Eunnie R. Rhee and Hwa Young Lee from New Life Counseling Center attended the 7th National PCIT conference in Oklahoma, USA.

In 2009, Eunnie R. Rhee and Young Nam Park attended the 9th National PCIT conference in Michigan, USA. In the conference, Eunnie Rhee presented Taking PCIT to Korea: Rewards and Challenges, in a symposium “Dissemination and implementation of PCIT outside the States: Cultural issues”.

In 2011, Eunnie R. Rhee, Young Nam Park, and 10 therapists from TTCCC attended the 2011 Biennial International PCIT Convention in Gainesville, Florida, USA. At the convention, Eunnie R. Rhee and Young Nam Park presented PCIT Progress Report: Korean Case Summary, in a symposium “Spotlight on International PCIT Research: Japan, Korea, Germany, and Netherlands.”

Research

Eunnie R. Rhee, Young Nam Park, and PCIT study assistants at TTCCC translated PCIT manual into Korean. They are in process of updating the manual in collaboration with two other Korean PCIT providers, Jeong Il Doo & Jin Hyung Duck, who also translated the manual for their PCIT study.

During the 2011 Biennial International PCIT Convention in Florida, USA, two poster presentations were made: 1) Eunnie R. Rhee, TTCCC, and Eun Sill Rhee, Handong University, presented Korean ECBI standardization study results, and 2) Jeong Il Doo, Hanyang University, presented her study, the effectiveness of group Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for children with disruptive behavioral problems and their mothers.
