Germany

Brief program description

The PCIT program in Schweinfurt, Germany, is located at the Leopoldina Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy program which offers comprehensive outpatient, inpatient and day treatment services for 2 – 18 year old children and adolescents and their families. The PCIT trainer team includes two child and adolescent psychiatrists, a psychologist, and a social worker.

Training

All “first-generation” therapists were trained in Gainesville, Florida by PCIT founder Professor Sheila Eyberg and her team during a 5-day workshop. Wolfgang Briegel, the program director in Schweinfurt, has completed advanced training in Oklahoma (by Master Trainers Beverly Funderburk and Melanie Nelson) and a 5-day workshop for the training-of-trainers program in Gainesville (by Sheila Eyberg and her team). On their way to become PCIT therapists and trainers all members of the Schweinfurt PCIT team have been regularly supervised by Master Trainer Regina Bussing, University of Florida. In December of 2010 Sheila Eyberg and Regina Bussing conducted a site visit supervising the first In- house PCIT training of five “second generation” therapists in Schweinfurt. Based on the site visit, the Schweinfurt PCIT training team was deemed qualified to conduct inhouse trainings as well as regional trainings. Meanwhile, all “second generation” trainees have attended a 2-day follow-up training and are regularly supervised on the PCIT cases.

Activities and events

In 2009, Wolfgang Briegel was invited to join the PCIT International Advisory Board and to serve on the International Development Task Force. He has attended the PCIT conferences in Traverse City (2009) and Gainesville (2011).

Research

To bring PCIT to Germany, all necessary PCIT materials were translated into German by Wolfgang Briegel and his team with Regina Bussing, University of Florida, doing the re-translation. A multi-site normatization study of the German ECBI version has been completed. Results of this study as well as results of a first PCIT case series have been presented at the 2011 Congress of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the 2011 Biennial International PCIT Convention. Furthermore, a study of clinical ECBI norms is under way as well as a normatization study of the German DPICS.
