FAQs

At PCIT International we realize that many of you have questions about PCIT (the best way to find a PCIT trainer, where to find PCIT equipment, etc).  We are starting this FAQ page in an effort to provide some answers.  Please be patient…this page is still “under construction.”  If you have a question about something that is not listed on the page, please do not hesitate to contact us at pcit.. Thanks!

Q: I am a therapist and would like to obtain PCIT training.  Where can I find a training near me?

A: There are quite a few PCIT Master Trainers located throughout the United States. You can find their contact information by going to this link: (it is the Certified Trainers page on our website)

http://www.pcit.org/certified-trainers/

Q: What if the trainer who is located closest to me does not have a PCIT training workshop scheduled?

A: Many PCIT Master Trainers will schedule trainings to suit your needs.  You should email them directly to inquire about additional training opportunities. We also have a calendar of future PCIT trainings here: (it is the Calendar of Events page on our website)

http://www.pcit.org/calendar-of-events/

For example, it looks as though there are some trainings already scheduled for Spring 2012 at the following locations:

Week of March 26 in Cincinnati (email: Robin.)

One day introduction workshop on April 9 in  New York (email: )

Week of May 7 in Auburn, Alabama (email: )

Week of May 21 in Johnson City, TN  (email: )

Q: My agency is thinking about adopting PCIT as a treatment approach. How much will we spend on equipment for the PCIT training process?

A: The question about cost is a difficult one to answer without knowing your current set up.  Do you have a one way mirror or way to observe families in a play room?  Do you have a way to hear the play room? For training purposes you would need to have a camera that would allow you to record sessions digitally (about $300-500). To conduct PCIT sessions you would need a bug in the ear system (the costs ranges from over $1000 for a very good system to $15 for a blue tooth attachment for your cell phone). You can find a comprehensive list of equipment costs here: Technology Handout (please note that all prices are from October of 2011 – prices and web site links may have changed). We recommend talking to your PCIT trainer to determine your specific agency needs.

Q: Where can I find a PCIT therapist for my family?

A: We do not have a registry of PCIT therapists but you can email us at pcit. and we will do our best to find a PCIT trained therapist near you.

Q: When is the next PCIT Conference?

A: The next PCIT conference is tentatively scheduled for September 2013 in Boston. Please stay tuned on our blog for more details!

Q: How can I purchase the PCIT manual?

A: The most up-to-date PCIT Manual is for sale on the web store. (http://www.pcit.org/web-store/)

Q: What toys are for appropriate use in PCIT?

A: Please see Page 27 of the PCIT 2011 manual. Creative, constructive toys that have no rules are best (e.g., blocks, legos, crayons and paper, play sets)

Q:How is PCIT used in the primary care setting?

A: PCIT has been used in the primary care setting with good outcomes. For a recent article, see:

  • Berkovits, M. D., O’Brien, K. A., Carter, C. G., & Eyberg, S. M. (2010). Early identification and intervention for behavior problems in primary care: A comparison of two abbreviated versions of parent-child interaction therapy. Behavior Therapy, 41(3), 375-387. doi:10.1016/j.beth.2009.11.002

Q: What is the difference between PCIT and TCIT?

A: Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy (TCIT) is an adaptation of PCIT for the school setting.  There are several articles on the use of TCIT in the preschool and early education setting.  The interested reader can learn more from the following article:

  • McIntosh, D. E., Rizza, M. G., & Bliss, L. (2000). Implementing empirically supported interventions: Teacher–Child Interaction Therapy. Psychology In The Schools, 37(5), 453-462. doi:10.1002/1520-6807(200009)37:5<453::AID-PITS5>3.0.CO;2-2

Q: Does PCIT involve the use of child restraint for discipline?
